In the eighteenth and nineteenth century, a portico was a frequent feature of a house for both aesthetic and practical reasons. A Haddonstone cast stone portico provides welcome shelter from the elements whilst also offering an architect, contractor or client the opportunity to embellish an otherwise perhaps rather dull entrance or entranceway with an individual design. This is often referred to as adding kerb appeal to the door, entrance or entranceway of a public building or private house.
Today, a portico is sometimes also referred to as a porch, entranceway or door surround and is often associated with Georgian, neo Georgian or Georgian Revival styles. Haddonstone’s cast stone door surrounds are detailed in a separate section of the Haddonstone website.
A Haddonstone cast stone portico is used to provide shelter and will also enhance a door, entrance or entranceway, giving the property added kerb appeal. A cast stone portico from Haddonstone can be created by combining a range of Haddonstone architectural designs - including columns, half columns, pilasters and entablature - to create a grand entrance and shelter.
The benefits and opportunities provided by utilising a Haddonstone portico, porch, entranceway or door surround are again being appreciated, for both a public building or a private house.
The Haddonstone collection of cast stone porticos include five designs using standard Haddonstone architectural designs such as columns, half columns, pilasters and entablature. It is possible for an architect, contractor or client to combine each architectural component to create a completely new portico or porch design, often in a Georgian, neo Georgian or Georgian Revival style. An additional four architectural components are also offered for use as individual entablature pieces for a porch, entrance, entranceway or door surround in a Georgian, neo Georgian or Georgian Revival style.
Haddonstone can also manufacture of a custom-made portico, porch, entrance, entranceway or door surround to the individual design of an architect, contractor or client. By using standard architectural designs, Haddonstone can manufacture cast stone porticos to practically any height, width or depth. The photographs shown here are examples of portico designs Haddonstone has created for clients. Haddonstone can create a unique portico design from standard components to suit your property or design.
Note: The Haddonstone portico architrave will, in most cases, require backing with an in situ reinforced concrete beam sufficient to carry the weight of the structure. Please see the relevant Haddonstone Technical Sheet number for assembly recommendations.
